Over the past ten years, Duke Health’s total community benefit and investment has been $7.1 billion. Of that cost, $175 million represents financial assistance for 457,946 patients, nearly all of whom call North Carolina home. For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024, Duke provided a total community benefit and investment of $1.021 billion. In 1925, James B. Duke willed $4 million to establish Duke University Hospital and its medical school.

Community members’ average lifespans are heavily influenced by the inequities that restrict access to healthy food, affordable health care, education, employment opportunities, and mental health support, according to KFF. Community health programs address disparities by ensuring equitable access to health resources. The hospitals worked in collaboration with Durham and Wake counties to assess community health care needs. Duke collaborates with many community organizations to improve health care in its hometown, Durham, North Carolina. Community health assessments are comprised of data and information from multiple sources, which describe the community’s demographics; health status; morbidity and mortality; socioeconomic characteristics; quality of life; community resources; behavioral factors; the environment (including the built environment); and other social and structural determinants of health status —Public Health Accreditation Board, Standards-Measures-Initial-Accreditation-Version-2022.pdf (phaboard.org), October 2022.

We serve as a convener, catalyst and advocate to build capacity in the public health community

Community health centers can serve as primary care providers in communities https://carbdm.org where socioeconomic factors limit health equity. From finding resources like a ride home from the hospital to organizing your continuity of care paperwork, they can help you navigate difficult health care issues. CDC’s National Center for State, Tribal, Local, and Territorial Public Health Infrastructure and Workforce helps drive public health forward and helps HDs deliver services to communities. We also file a Community Benefits Plan Update annually, which outlines our community health implementation strategy and describes numerous other outreach programs and activities provided to community members. Dignity Health awards grants to non-profit organizations addressing community health needs collaboratively, and innovating to transform service delivery. We put this mission into practice in part through community health programs, community grants and investments, and sustainability initiatives.

The HDABs community of practice (hereafter HDABs-CoP) stands as a testament to the collaborative commitment to navigate the complexities of secondary use of health data in the scope of the upcoming European Health Data Space Regulation.
